There’s something magical about fall in Ottawa. The golden leaves, soft light, and crisp air all combine to create the perfect backdrop for timeless family photos. As a family photographer in Ottawa, I’ve photographed countless families in every season — and I always find myself recommending fall for the most relaxed, joyful, and beautiful sessions.

Here’s why fall just might be the perfect time for your next family photo shoot — and how to make the most of it.

The Light is Soft and Dreamy

Fall brings some of the best natural lighting conditions of the year. The sun sits lower in the sky, creating that warm, golden glow that flatters every skin tone and adds a beautiful softness to every frame. Unlike the harsh overhead light of summer, fall light is forgiving — especially in the early evenings.

That means you don’t need to wait for golden hour or stress about harsh shadows. We can capture stunning photos at a variety of times throughout the day.

The Backdrops Are Pure Autumn Magic

From fiery maples to rolling hills dusted in gold, Ottawa and the surrounding areas transform into a living painting come late September through October. Here are just a few of my favourite fall family photo locations:

  • Hog’s Back Park: The rushing waterfall and forest trails give your photos texture, colour, and motion. The maple trees here turn brilliant shades of orange and red.
  • Mer Bleue Bog: This conservation area offers unique boardwalk trails and open marshlands with rich autumn tones. It’s peaceful and striking — and perfect for relaxed, barefoot-style photos.
  • Gatineau Park: With sweeping views, towering trees, and winding paths, this is a fall paradise. Families who love adventure or want a scenic backdrop will fall in love with it instantly.

No Mosquitoes, No Meltdowns

Let’s be real — family photo sessions are only fun if the kids (and parents!) are comfortable. In the fall, temperatures are cooler, bugs are gone, and there’s no need to worry about heat-induced crankiness or sweaty faces.

Kids can run, jump, and cuddle without overheating. Parents can wear cozy sweaters and boots without breaking a sweat. It’s the best of all worlds — especially if you’re dressing multiple little ones!

What to Wear for Fall Family Photos

Fall is the season of textures, layers, and earth tones. Here are a few outfit tips I share with every family:

  • Think soft neutrals, warm browns, olive greens, mustard yellows, deep burgundy, or navy.
  • Coordinate but don’t match — variation in tone and fabric looks great on camera.
  • Layer up with cardigans, scarves, and boots. Not only is it practical, but it adds dimension to your photos.
  • Avoid logos or neon colours — these can be distracting.

I send every family a prep guide before their session and can offer personalized outfit suggestions based on your location and family size.

My Approach: Natural, Joyful, and Real

What sets my family sessions apart? I focus on connection over perfection. Instead of stiff poses and forced smiles, I create space for laughter, movement, and genuine moments. Whether it’s your toddler hugging your leg, your partner swinging your little one in the air, or that quiet in-between moment when everyone leans into each other — I’m there to capture it all.

You don’t have to be “camera-ready.” You just have to show up, be yourselves, and let the season (and me!) do the rest.
